Adult crickets aren’t exactly careful parents. They’ll dig through laying substrate, disturb freshly laid eggs, and may even eat them.

The Cricket Egg Guardian™ is a compact, reusable laying and incubation system designed to protect cricket eggs and help you get more pinheads from every breeding cycle.

Its snug-fitting thatched protective lid features a durable, chew-resistant pattern that allows female crickets to reach the moist substrate with their ovipositors and safely deposit their eggs while helping keep the rest of the colony from digging into the substrate and disturbing them.

Once laying is complete, simply swap the thatched lid for the included solid incubation lid and move the tray to a warm location.

Having four complete trays makes it easy to rotate your Cricket Egg Guardians through different stages of the breeding cycle.

How It Works

1. Fill
Add moist substrate such as peat moss, coco coir, or clean soil to the lay bin.

2. Let Them Lay
Snap on the Cricket Egg Guardian™ thatched lid and place the tray inside your adult cricket enclosure for a few days. Females can deposit their eggs through the openings while the lid helps protect the substrate from the rest of the colony.

3. Swap the Lid
Remove the lay bin from the adult enclosure and replace the thatched lid with the included solid lid.

4. Incubate
Keep the eggs warm and the substrate lightly moist during incubation. Avoid direct heat.

5. Watch for Pinheads!
Once your baby crickets begin hatching, you’ll already have your next generation of feeders underway.

Incubation Tips

What do cricket eggs look like?
Cricket eggs look like tiny, off-white grains of rice. You may see a few near the surface, but many will be hidden beneath the substrate.

Keep the substrate moist, not soaked.
The laying substrate should remain slightly moist throughout incubation. Avoid allowing it to completely dry out or become waterlogged.

Warmth is important.
Cricket eggs develop best with gentle, consistent warmth. Good locations may include the top of a reptile enclosure, a warm garage or shed shelf, or the top of a refrigerator.

Do not apply direct heat to the Cricket Egg Guardian™.
The product is made from PLA plastic, which can warp or melt when exposed to excessive or direct heat or sun.

Prepare for tiny escape artists.
During incubation, we recommend placing your egg-filled Cricket Egg Guardians inside a larger escape-resistant container before hatching begins. Newly hatched crickets—often called pinheads—are extremely small.

A plastic shoebox-style storage container works great for creating a simple nursery area.
