FAQs
What is the SquirmStack?
Answer:
The SquirmStack is a compact, stackable mini farm for raising mealworms or superworms at home. It features self-sifting trays and a central pupae sanctuary, making worm care simple, clean, and mess-free.
🐛Do I need worms to get started?
Answer:
Yes — the SquirmStack is your housing system. You’ll need to purchase live mealworms or superworms separately. We recommend starting with 500–1,000 worms.
🧼 Does it smell?
Answer:
Nope — as long as you clean regularly! Mealworms don’t smell when kept dry and well-maintained. Just replace veggie scraps every 2–3 days and use the sifting tray to remove waste.
🔁 How long is the life cycle?
Answer:
- Full size worm → Pupa: 2–3 weeks
- Pupa → Beetle: 1–3 weeks
- Beetles start laying eggs ~1–2 weeks after emerging
- Eggs hatch in ~1–2 weeks
- Hatched worm to full size ~ 8- 12 weeks
🌡️ What’s the ideal temperature?
Answer:
Keep them at room temperature (70–80°F / 21–27°C). The darker the better.
🍽️ What do they eat?
Answer:
Mealworms eat dry grains (like wheat bran or oats) and small veggie pieces (like carrot or potato) for moisture. Remove uneaten food before it molds.
🪲 What is the center cap in the beetle bin for?
Answer:
That’s your pupa sanctuary! It keeps them safe until they transform into beetles.
📦 Can I add more trays later?
Answer:
Yes! The SquirmStack is modular — easily add more trays as your colony grows or to separate worm sizes.
Each worm tray can hold 1,000 large mealworms or up to 3,000 small/medium mealworms.
🛒 Where do I buy worms or accessories?
Answer:
Check out our shop for extra trays, and other add-ons like recommended coarse wheat bran for worm food/bedding.
